James Robinson, Sr was born about___1896________ in South Carolina, apparently raised by John Johnson and his wife, Della.
The 1930 United States Federal Census of Chester County Pennsylvania lists him as a 36 year old head of the Coates Street home which consisted of wife, Nancy, and eight children, including a niece, also named Nancy. Coatesville population was about 14,500 at the time.
The 1920 U.S. Federal Census lists Pop living on William Street or Alley in (Columbia) Richland County South Carolina, living in the home of John Johnson, a 50 year old Black man and wife Della, a 53 year old Black female. James is listed as “adopted” age 24 and married to Nancy, age 26. James Jr was listed as a 2 1/2 year old grandson. Theodore, was only 1 1/2.
Pop worked at Luken Steel Mill, an American steel company founded in 1810 in Coatesville and his favorite place to be was the Elks Home on Merchant Street in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Pop died of colon cancer in 1954. See this link for info about Luken-> http://www.lukensnhd.org/
Nancy Robinson probably never did not work outside the home, as in punch the clock work, but she was active in her community and a loving grandma.
Many thanks to John H Robinson, Jr, our cousin, who provided this photo of “Pop” James Robinson, our grandfather.
It means a lot to be able to look upon his face, after all these years of searching and longing.
Uncle Jim’s name was James D(avis) Robinson, Jr but Daddy says James Sr., had the middle name of Walter. Ok…that will be followed up.
